Joyce McGee has a strong background in public interest law. As a public interest attorney at Prairie State Legal Services in Illinois, Joyce represented low-income residents in Lake County in Domestic Violence, Family Law, Housing, Special Education, Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid cases. As a Senior Attorney at HALT, An Organization of Americans for Legal Reform, Joyce worked to improve access and reduce costs in our civil justice system at both the state and federal levels. While at HALT, Joyce co-authored the published law review article, Small Claims Reform: A Means of Expanding Access to the American Civil Justice System. Joyce has worked as a Coordinator with the DC Consortium of Legal Service Providers, an organization devoted to coordinating legal services for the poor in the District of Columbia. As a Special Education Attorney at a private law firm, Joyce represented low-income disabled children being denied special education rights in the District of Columbia. She also co-edited Special Education Advocacy under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for Children in the Juvenile Delinquency System, a training manual for public interest attorneys, disability rights attorneys and defense attorneys representing children in delinquency matters and in status offenses. While a law student, Joyce represented low-income residents of the District of Columbia in Juvenile, HIV, Social Security, Guardianship and Custody cases.
Joyce was born in Chicago, Illinois. She graduated with honors from Columbia College Chicago in 1991 with a BA in Journalism. She graduated cum laude from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law in 1998. Joyce is licensed to practice law in Illinois and the District of Columbia.
